Custom Oakley Trunk Mat

After the completeion of the Oakley Sub Grilles, we decided to make the trunk more flowing and custom by adding a trunk mat incorporating the Oakley logo.

We started by tracing the contours of the trunk lid to a few sheets of bristol board.

Next we traced, cut and sanded the panel out of 1/4" MDF.

To make the Oakley logo we went to the computer, designed and printed out a template. Next we cut out and rigioursly sanded the logo as well as a trim ring from 1/2" MDF.

Next we wanted to embose this logo so we cut out 2 1/2" stands, raised one side with shims to give it a leaning look.

We then streched and stapled material over the logo and the panel to the contours we were happy with.

Next came the multiple layers of fiberglass resin, sanding, and body filler (more sanding). Thanks Brian!

Fresh body filler .

The bodyfiller sanded.

On the logo we used steel screen and black speaker grille cloth stapled behind. It was then carpeted in charcoal interior carpet.

Black automotive carpet was used to carpet the rest of the project.

In the near future, the steel screen will be removed and replaced with a piece of sandblaster plexi-glass with red neons behind activated by the trunk light switch to give the glowing look.

Using 1" self taper screws, we were able to mount the panel in place from inside so there is no visible screws or clips.

The panel complete with the GTP badge from the side of the car that was taken off during the de-badging proceess.

Here is the final product including the sub grilles.
